JD pretty much nails it, but here's my 2 cents:

While I'm sure there's some cliquishness at times, I think for the most part, editors want to acquire material that will help their magazines to sell, or books that will sell. Agents function the same way. In my opinion, $$ or the potential of making $$, is King. That said, networking and contacts always help, even if only to know when new markets open up or when markets change what they're looking for, things like that.

So, some people choose willfully to be "outsider" for whatever reasons (fun/aesthetic/DIY spirit/total control of their art, etc.), and others probably become so simply out of frustration from not finding enough success in the traditional system.

But in the end, it really doesn't matter. Decide what's right for you and pursue that goal with passion.

I'm not a poet by any means but your political & feminist mail art sounds very interesting. This is all new to me (I need to get out more . . .)

You aren't over-analyzing. You are being sensitive. Yes - maybe there is a not uncomfortable explanation. But until you know that - of course you are uncomfortable. I certainly would have been. Very, very uncomfortable.

Daniel Quinn wrote some really interesting things about carnivals, fairs, and circuses in his book 'Beyond Civilization'. He used the circus life as an example of a form of organization that moves beyond the typical shackles of civilization, because it is run cooperatively (often), because it is a real community that works and plays together, because it is fairly non-hierarchical, because it is based on a passion for what they do.

in this case, who knows? interesting the stand-bys compared it to seeing a stripper. that profession is laden with a lot of the same questions. and if you ask 20 strippers about their jobs you might get 20 different answers about how they feel about it. so maybe it's not right and maybe it's okay. hard for an outsider to tell I guess. just like anything.

but i don't think you're wrong to think about these things and wonder. it's great that you do.

<i>"why I can’t just have fun at a fair"</i>

Because it is no fun unless <i>everyone</i> is having fun.
